Botulinum Toxin Injections

Botulinum Toxin A injections (Dr Minke Koegelenberg, Dr Izolda Heydenrych and Dr Marius Hannah)

Botox® is an injectable neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is widely used for smoothing frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles.

  • Ideal for individuals looking to:
    • Smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions (such as squinting, frowning, or raising eyebrows).
    • Prevent the formation of deep lines or improve existing fine lines.
    • Treat neck bands (platysma bands) or excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in areas like the underarms, hands, or feet.
  • Most effective for patients in their 30s to 60s, although younger clients may opt for preventative Botox®.
  • Not suitable for:
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.
    • Those with a neurological disorder (e.g., ALS, myasthenia gravis).
    • People with allergies to Botox® or any of its ingredients.
    • Patients with active skin infections in the treatment area.
  • Before Treatment:
    • A consultation to assess the areas for treatment and your medical history.
    • The area is marked, and the procedure takes 10–20 minutes depending on the number of areas being treated.
  • During Treatment:
    • The practitioner will use a fine needle to inject small amounts of Botox® into the targeted muscles.
    • Minimal discomfort—some clients describe the sensation as a slight pinch.
    • No downtime—patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
  • After Treatment:
    • You may experience slight redness or bruising at the injection site, but this typically resolves within a few hours to days.
    • The results start to become visible within 3–5 days, with full effects occurring in about 10–14 days.
    • Effects typically last 3–4 months, after which repeat treatments are needed to maintain results.
  • Yes—Botox® is FDA-approved and has been used safely in both medical and cosmetic treatments for decades.
  • Side effects are generally mild and may include temporary bruising, swelling, or headache at the injection site.
  • Severe side effects are rare but can include drooping eyelids, uneven results, or difficulty swallowing, particularly if administered incorrectly.
  • It’s important to choose a qualified and experienced provider to ensure the safest and most effective treatment.
  • Botox® and Laser Treatments:
    • It’s recommended to wait at least 24hours after a Botox® treatment before undergoing laser resurfacing treatments (e.g., CO₂, Fraxel, or IPL) to allow the toxin to fully settle and avoid interference with the skin’s healing response.
    • If you’re having laser treatments before Botox®, it is recommended that you wait at least 2 weeks before you have your Botox®.
  • Botox® and Ultherapy:
    • A safe interval between Botox® and Ultherapy (ultrasound skin lifting) is typically 1–2 weeks. This ensures that the Botox® has fully settled and won’t interfere with the energy delivery and skin contraction of Ultherapy.
    • Ultherapy can also enhance the effects of Botox® by tightening the skin and offering long-term anti-aging benefits.
  • BOTOX® and Hyaluronic Acid Fillers:
    • If you’re combining Botox® with hyaluronic acid fillers (such as Juvederm or Restylane), the timing depends on the areas being treated:
      • Botox® first: Wait at least 2 weeks after Botox® before getting hyaluronic acid fillers to avoid altering the filler placement.
      • Fillers first: Wait 1–2 weeks before Botox® to ensure that the filler has settled properly and results are as expected.
      • Combination treatments can be safely done with the correct planning, providing synergistic effects for facial rejuvenation.
